Heme oxygenase, an essential enzyme in heme catabolism. It cleaves the heme ring to form biliverdin, which is subsequently converted to bilirubin by biliverdin reductase. The protein exhibits cytoprotective effects since excess of free heme sensitizes cells to undergo apoptosis.
