Proheparin-binding EGF-like growth factor is cleaved into heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor. HBEGF is an epidermal growth factor produced by monocytes and macrophages that mediaates its effect via EGFR, ERBB2 and ERBB4. It has been shown to play a role in wound healing, cardiac hypertrophy and heart development and function.
